ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to study on skill acquisition programmes and youth empowerment using Ibadan North-East Local Government Area, Oyo State. Specifically, the study was aimed at examining the youth employment programmes in the State and how to implement and  improve the skills and economic well being of youths in the state; to determine the policies of the various employment programmes in the State and how well formulated, do they give room for innovations in order to achieve better results; to assess the operation, problems and prospects of youth employment programmes in Oyo State; and to make recommendations on how the employment programmes implemented in the State can be made more effective in addressing youth unemployment. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 200 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that Youth employment programmes implemented in the State has improved the skills and economic well being of youths in the state; The policies of the various employment programmes in the state are well formulated and they give room for innovations in order to achieve better results; The operation, problems and prospect of youth employment programmes in Oyo State has been be executed to a very high extent. The study recommend Government should ensure that the skill acquisition scheme challenges such as problems of inadequate training materials, dearth of funding, poor remuneration of tutors, insufficient number of tutors etc, all of which contributed to failure should be resolved to promote the scheme.
